"After qualifying and getting caught up at druids on the first lap I worked as hard as the bike would let me to get a result. The rear link helped edge grip but I was still struggling for grip. Although sixth doesn't reflect what we're capable of, I did what I could with what I have today and I'm happy that I rode well"

The results saw Tom getting pipped for third place in the 2008 British Superbike Cup Championship by experinced superbike rider Gary Mason.

"The Cup Championship stepped up a level this year with some big teams and experienced riders joining the grid. That combined with the new supersport engine rules which seemed to hit us more than most meant it's been a tough year.

But the whole team has worked exceptionally hard from the first round to the last to get the results and podiums, I owe them all a massive thank you.

Of course without the loyal help and backing from Hardinge Machine Tools, Ice Valley Mineral Water, and all our supporters without whom none of it would have been possible and I'm indebted to them for their belief in myself and the team"

Tom Tunstall was still searching for an improved set-up on the teams Honda CBR1000RR Tunstall started the first of the day's 30lap outings with a revised front fork setting. However it wasn't enough, having lost time at the start he wasn't able to catch the cup riders ahead and finished race one in seventh position.

Tunstall Just Misses Out on Another Podium

Tom Tunstall

The penultimate round of the 2008 British Superbike Championships took place at Silverstone over the weekend and a battling performance saw Hardinge Ice Valley racer Tom Tunstall just miss out on netting his seventh rostrum finish of the year.
Having made good progress with the set-up of the Honda CBR1000RR superbike in the free practice sessions Tunstall capitalised straight away in the qualifying session setting his fastest lap of the weekend so far on his 1st run with a new tyre.
After pitting for a second fresh rear Pirelli and looking to improve his time further a mechanical problem ended his run meaning he was unable to progress and was classified 6th of the Superbike Cup runners.
"We made a good jump forward on the set-up this morning and it's a shame my qualifying was cut short. But the guys will easily be able to fix the problem. I think the race pace of most cup runners will be tight therefore it'll be crucial to get away with them".
Race one showed Tom's prediction to be true - after being held up in the opening three laps trying to pass Ducati mounted Leon Morris, Tunstall had lost over four seconds to the cup contenders ahead, and despite posting a succession of qualifying pace laps was unable to close the gap and ended the race in fifth place.
"I knew I had to get away with them but I lost too much time early on. It was frustrating as I could hold the gap for a time but couldn't close it. We'll make some changes to the gearbox for race two and hopefully give them something to be worry about!"

Slow Start But Solid Finish for Tunstall

Super Bike's!

The Cadwell Park race circuit located deep in the Lincolnshire Wolds played host for the latest round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship. And the fortunes of Hardinge Ice Valley racer Tom Tunstall were hampered with bike problems at the start of both races but the Yorkshirman produced two battling rides to bag another load of Championship points.

Tom and the team spent the free practice sections working on bike set-up before the debut of the new "F1 style" qualifying session. Tunstall just missed the cut by less than half a second commenting

"With only 25 mintues to get a time we didn't have time to work on the bike set-up it was just a matter of pushing for a time. We knew it was going to be tight to get through to the next phase this weekend. I enjoyed the new format, the pressure is on all session and it pushes you. Also for the fans it's more exciting "

"We're placed fifth of the cup riders on the grid and apart from [Gary] Mason the times are close and if we can keep progressing with the bike we'll be in the fight tomorrow"
"The start was shocking! The bike didn't pull away cleanly and I had to slip the clutch so much. We believe it's an ECU fuelling issue and we need to get it sorted as I'm giving too much away. Once I got going I'm happy with how I rode. It's difficult to pass around here, especially in a pack of riders as not only is it a tight circuit, you've got to keep one eye on the guy behind as well as line up the rider ahead. The frustrating part is I have the pace to race with the guys for the podium but I need to get away with them".

With just over two weeks before the next round at Croft the Hardinge Ice Valley team have a test planned to come back stronger, especially at the start!!

Oulton Podium for Tunstall

Oulton Podium for Tunstall

Hardinge Ice Valley's Tom Tunstall added to his silverware collection once more at the weekend, with a third place finish in the British Superbike Cup race one at Oulton Park.

Back to Oulton for the second time in 2008, Britain's top Superbike teams were again treated to changeable weather throughout the weekends practice and qualifying sessions.
Having posted the third fastest time in the wet practice Tunstall qualified 5th on the Cup grid for Sunday's races;

"Qualifying went ok considering the lack of decent track time this weekend, we still have a few suspension issues to iron out and we've got something to try in warm up. With my position on the grid I'm close to the other cup guys so with a few tweaks we'll be up for a good race"

With less than an hour between warm-up and race one the Hardinge Ice Valley Team worked flat out to prep the Honda CBR1000RR machine ready for race one, and with the track still drying tyre choice was going to be crucial.

In race two Tom again got off the line well but was pushed wide and lost time in long left hander -Cascades. Ending lap one back in eighth, Tunstall had fought through to fifth by lap six but had lost ground on the cup riders ahead.

The next round of the British Superbike Championships crosses the border to Knockhill in Scotland over the weekend of the 8th-10th August.
